Post Crafting, Non-Combat professions, etc.

Okay, I know there are numerous threads about this, I don't want to hear about it. I want original ideas for Non-Combat things this game should have.

My first idea is for Non-Combat professions, for those people who don't want to do quests, missions, etc. I think they should have mining, weaponsmithing, fletching, herblaw, alchemy, and maybe some others. These would not be a grind, they would be spare time things, or a way of making some extra gold. For example, if you mine, you can only mine for so long, maybe 15 minutes or less, then a huge horde of monsters will attack. You try to run back with your ore without dying. If you make it out, you have ore to craft with or sell? See what I'm getting at?

Now, let's see your ideas. And if I see a search troll, I am ignoring you, and saying you spammed my nice thread.

That really reminds me of Runescape. Seriously, Runescape is no competition for Guild Wars, but still. That's just too MMORPG for my taste. I believe Guild Wars focused on THINKING about your skill choices, Guild vs Guild action, tactical team play, and unlocking.

Non-combat oriented things to do in Guild Wars just promotes the "grind," and is really pointless in a game like Guild Wars. Not to rape your idea, but I just don't think it's very "Guild Wars" IMO.

To do your "no-grind" thing is basically a quest. Kind of like "jack Althea's Ashes and run for it before the Charr kill you!" Making money/gold + wasting spare time does not require such a dynamic change like those you are suggesting. Already I see "dice casino's" and such popping up, and people who do mass trading. I think ArenaNet was aiming to please questers and PvP'ers, not those looking for "non-combat RPG's."

Let's see... I said there would be nor grind involved, it would be a spare time thing, or a way to make a bit of gold. It would be exciting, especially the mining. Imagine, you're swinging your pickaxe, and then, a Boulder Elemental or something of the like would attack. Then more and more... you'd run away, trying to stay alive and make it out with your ores. Same idea could be implemented with the other things. And this was a suggestion board, not a troll me board.

Yeah I think I was editing while you were typing your post. Read edit :/

In reality, I don't think ArenaNet is ever going to incorporate non-combat based activities, other than certain quests.

:/

I would make a suggestion to make it seem like I'm actually contributing, but any non-combat idea I suggest will be easily shot down if you think about it carefully.

I played a full time crafter with over 200 days played on one of the busiest servers of DAoC. I know crafting. This game really doesn't need it. We don't want to turn this game into one of the old MMORPGs. We have those if we want to play them. This game is very different, and refreshingly so. Success in this game is based on one thing... one thing only. To try to do it all, like so many others have, is to assure failure. Do one thing. Do it well.

Wow, I tried being polite, and you call me a troll. I didn't know whether or not you really meant it, or said it jokingly, but it seems like you meant it. I can take that.

But I guess Shagsbeard a troll too, huh? You didn't say so, so I guess I'm the only troll here. Can't you even take failure like a man? Just give up on this bogus idea and let it be, not lash out at anyone who tries to help you.

Did you expect ArenaNet to bend down and prostrate themselves before you for you to help them design some kind of non-combat RPG that will sell million more copies of Guild Wars? These guys know what they're doing, and they also know that what you are suggesting has no place in Guild Wars. It was a nice thought, but it's just a pipe dream. Give it up. And shape up your attitude while you're at it.

I agree with Shagsbeard and eA-Zaku on this one. I read somewhere that Arenanet intentionally made the crafter, material trader, and dye trader NPCs and such to eliminate the need for non-combat professions so that the players can all focus on combat, questing, etc.

Also (this kinda ties in with the above), a fully non-combat profession really has no place in the PvP/GvG focused world of Guild Wars. Unless they have some really good combat skills that no other profession can provide, no PvPer is going to play as them, and since the focus of Guild Wars is supposed to be on PvP, and not PvE, this makes it almost certain that such a thing won't be implemented. I'm not trying to bash the idea, but realistically, it has almost no chance of being implemented. If you're looking for a game with non-combat options, you should probably switch to a different MMORPG, since Guild Wars is probably not going to move in that direction.

Uh, he wasn't being a troll. He just had a different opinion, so you did the thing all people who are unskilled in the arena of debate do. They attack ad-hoc

it doesnt necessarily be a non-combat *profession* it can just be a job or something like that. these *jobs* can be learnt by all classes such as Alchemy, Herbalism, Blacksmith, Mining, etc. i'd say its a good idea

If anything you should thank him for keeping this post near the top.

I actually liked crafting in FFXI but I must say that GW simply isn't THAT game. I know sometimes we want something that we really liked from another game, but it just isn't going to happen. No matter how much you SAY it won't be a grind, you likely won't fall into the category for which it is a grind. Many players will.

Lastly, let's look at your mechanic.

Run out get "ore." Get attacked. Run for life. Repeat. Sounds like a ton of fun huh.

Next.

Heh, I don't see how there wouldn't be a grind, essentially to have any skill in doing something you'd have to spend enough time in it, if you made it so utterly simple to get there, then trades become trivial, however, a few have already identified the problem with this kind of suggestion, essentially, it is a Quest, Mission, and PvP game, that is what it was designed for.

To say you are bored of them is like saying you want people in Counter-Strike to do something besides just repetitive killing, it is the purpose of the game and nothing would fit other than.

Granted I think a few tradeskill types COULD HAVE worked, but, that would be a rework of numerous systems which really, don't need to be there, I've never understood how picking away at an ore mine is any different than hacking away at a dwarven face, just bring back the iron ingots you smelt aka salvage, and go forge aka craft it into something useful like some armor, same deal basically, especially when weapons aren't hard to get exactly so there is little reason.

Guild wars doesnt need Point and click mindless peons work. Its far above that, notice the level cap ? now you dont have to play 3400 hours a day just to remain skilled.
Also, the fact that you called zaku a troll just because he disagreed with you was stupid.

Nah, don't bother with crafting in this. I love Ultima Online. I love the fact I can spend hours mining. I love the fact I can make my own weapons. I can go fishing. I can chop down trees and make a bed. But thats the thing. UO, along with WoW, EQ and all the other 'classic' MMO's are about an online LIFE. You are meant to live out the characters entire life, eat, drink, fight and make money.

Guild Wars is not about the characters life, it is about fighting back the enemies. The main point of GW is either complete the missions or compete in PvP, whereas in UO it is to make your character and then IF you want to, there are mini quests to do. Sure you can collect skills etc in GW but thats not really what GW was intended for.

I'd have to say if you really want crafting, there are tons of free UO shards out there to join. Right now I'm enjoying the fact that GW is totally unlike any other game; no huge levels, no crafting, no ultimate items to aim for... its completely unique.

I don't believe crafting, such as in SWG which I also played, will ever fit into the Guild Wars system. Player items and loot items have never (IMO) existed peaceably nor will they ever. A game should always stay with one or the other.
